Commotion 1.1 Upgrade Guide

From previous versions to the latest version

Introduction

Commotion Router version 1.1 is due to be released very soon. This is a bug-fix release, and should be more stable and provide better performance than previous versions. For these reasons, OTI recommends all users of previous versions of Commotion Router upgrade to version 1.1.

There are a few things to keep in mind when upgrading from previous versions of Commotion Router:

  1. Old versions of Commotion are not compatible with Version 1.0 and newer. If you are upgrading, wireless nodes with the old software will not mesh with wireless nodes with the new software. Please see the Breaking Changes blog post for more information.
  2. It is not possible to upgrade Commotion nodes with old versions of the software over the mesh, or from the wireless connection. If you update the software over a wireless connection, you will lose access to that node. For security reasons, only the Ethernet connection is enabled after an upgrade to version 1.1, until the Setup Wizard is run and the configuration is set.
  3. If upgrading from any version of Commotion prior to 1.0, you must clear all settings - the name of the node, all network information, any passwords, and any custom settings. These settings are not compatible with newer versions, and if you “keep settings” through an update, it will lead to bugs and strange behaviour on the node.

Upgrade Instructions

Below there are three sets of upgrade instructions - one for the “Pre-Release” series of Commotion software, one for the “Developer Release”, and one for the full release of the software, version 1.0 and up. If you aren’t sure what version of Commotion you are updating from, please browse to the administration panel of the node and look at the bottom of the page. The version should be listed there.

Pre-Release 2 and 3 - PR2, PR2.1, PR3

The Pre-Release versions of Commotion have a very similar user interface, so the instructions are the same. First connect to the node via the Ethernet port and statically set your computer’s IP address to 192.168.1.254. Then browse to http://192.168.1.20 and log in to the Administration panel.

In the Administration panel, select System, then click Backup / Flash Firmware:

Selecting the Flash Firmware menu item under the System menu

On the Backup / Flash Firmware page, scroll down to the section titled “Flash New Firmware Image”. Click and de-select “Keep Settings”, then click “Choose File” and choose the Commotion 1.1 image for your router.

De-selecting "Keep Settings" and uploading the upgrade file

When the file is selected, click “Flash image…”, and wait a few seconds for the file to upload. A new page should appear, and ask you to verify the image. Select “Proceed” and wait a few minutes for the software to update.

You must then set your computer to get an IP address from DHCP on the Ethernet port. Once the Commotion node has fully booted, you will receive an IP from the node, and you can go to http://thisnode in your web browser. From there, run the Setup Wizard and re-configure your node!

Developer Release 1 and 2 - DR1, DR1.1, DR2

The various Developer Release versions of Commotion have a very similar user interface, so the instructions are the same. First connect to the node via the Ethernet port and statically set your computer’s IP address to 192.168.1.254. Then browse to http://192.168.1.20 and log in to the Administration panel.

In the Administration panel, select System, then click Backup / Flash Firmware:

You must then set your computer to get an IP address from DHCP on the Ethernet port. Once the Commotion node has fully booted, you will receive an IP from the node, and you can go to http://thisnode in your web browser. From there, run the Setup Wizard and re-configure your node!

Version 1.0 and above - 1.0, 1.1

The full 1.0 and later versions of Commotion have a different user interface than earlier version. Going forward, new versions of Commotions should keep a similar interface, so the instructions are the same for version 1.0 and 1.1. First connect to the node via the Ethernet connection let your computer get an IP address from the node with DHCP. Then browse to http://thisnode and log in to the Administration panel.

In the Administration panel, first select Advanced to bring up another set of menus:

Selecting the Advanced menu tree in the Commotion interface

In the Advanced panel, select System, then click Backup / Flash Firmware:

Selecting the Flash Firmware menu item under the System menu

On the Backup / Flash Firmware page, scroll down to the section titled “Flash New Firmware Image”. You can leave “Keep Settings” selected. Click “Choose File” and choose the Commotion 1.1 image for your router.
